For solid sampling in IR a few mg. of sample are ground alongwith KBr to from a disc. Very high pressure about 10 tons is required. The KBr press is capable of producing such an high pressure.

The electrically operated KBr press is for automated operation, to save muscle power, to avoid strain on delicate hand.
Smooth, gradual built up of pressure gives better quality of pellet, compared to manually operated press. The pressure switch ensures termination of pressure exactly at same pressure - every time. This feature is again useful for the same quality - for every pellet.
